Internship scheme is a quickly-growing new startup based just outside Cambridge, and we’re looking to work with talented and enthusiastic interns to support our growth

(Note that this is our general, permanent internship scheme, but in summer 2019 we’re also offering specific software development internships – for details of that, see here)

Job description

We love taking interns. We’ve done it several times before and have always found them to be great contributors to the company’s work, so we’re always on the look out for more. If you’re a recent graduate or current student – undergrad, masters or PhD – in search of a 4-12 week placement at any time of the year, paid at a competitive rate and with a great range of employee benefits, do apply.

If you’re successful, you’ll join us at our beautiful office in a village just outside Cambridge, where you’ll work alongside our team. You’ll get experience of a wide range of activities as you contribute to our work, and gain valuable experience while impacting the business. You’ll also take responsibility for an independent project to complete during your internship.

As an intern, you’ll work in one of a few areas:

  • Software development: you’ll contribute to the web-based connection platform that our business development team use to reach out to experts and link them up with our clients. You’ll get hands-on experience with JavaScript, Angular, CSS, HTML, Node.js and MySQL.
  • Data science and machine learning: you’ll work on the AI-based search and ranking technologies that we use to find the best experts to speak on any topic.
  • We’re also open to interns working in business development or operations – whether it’s building relationships with our clients as you deliver on our work for them, or refining the administrative and operational systems that are vital support for our business, there are plenty of possibilities. Creativity is a core requirement for these positions – so convince us why we need you!

During your internship you’ll also complete your own independent project – we’ll decide on a topic together with you, finding something that you find exciting and will help you develop the skills you want to focus on, while also being valuable to our business. A few ideas of the sorts of things you could work on on the tech side of things:

  • The creation and implementation of an API
  • Building machine learning text classifiers to automate the creation of accurate expert profiles, based on content found online.
  • Coding a user interface to respond dynamically to user interaction
  • Creating customised chatbots to automate certain interactions with experts and clients.

About you

  • You’re a current student or recent graduate of an undergraduate, masters or PhD course – or maybe a talented self-taught software developer.
  • If you’d like to work on our search and ranking technologies, then you should have skills in data analysis using Python. Experience with machine learning would be a definite bonus, but you can learn this on the job, so an interest and enthusiasm are more important.
  • If you’d like to work as a software developer on our expert connection platform, then knowledge of JavaScript is a must. Experience building web apps with Angular or Node.js would be an advantage, but is also a skill that can be learnt on the job.
  • For non-technical roles, strong communication skills are essential. Whether you’re talking to our clients or collaborating within our team, you can’t do without them!
  • Ability for creative problem-solving is essential for anyone working with us. We’re a small and quickly expanding company, and things move fast – we come up against new situations all the time, and you should be innovative and proactive in how you get us through them.
  • Importantly, you have a desire to work in a startup, and enthusiasm to develop your skills working on real-world problems.

Compensation & details of employment:

  • Interns working in our tech teams will be paid at a rate of £15-20,000 per annum pro rata dependent on role and experience – that’s £2500-3000 for an 8-week internship.
  • Employment will be for 4-12 weeks – we’re flexible within this range, and happy to take interns at any time of the year.
  • We have a limited number of bedrooms available on-site which may be available for any who need somewhere to stay for the period.

  • Exciting start-up environment!
  • 25 days paid leave per year pro rata plus public holidays (works out as 4-7 working days off in a 6-10 week summer placement).
  • Beautiful office with fully-equipped kitchen, games console and gardens. There’s a gym on-site, and a barbecue with regular socials.
  • If our annual company retreat (to an exciting international location!) falls within your internship, you’ll get to come on that!
