Software Development / Machine Learning Internships Summer 2020

We love taking interns – we’ve done it several times before and have always found them to be great contributors to the company’s work. We’re therefore offering several positions this summer – we’re open to applications from final year students on undergraduate courses; masters or PhD students; or recent graduates.

If you’re successful, you’ll be working alongside our team for 6-10 weeks this summer in our Cambridge office, located a stone’s throw from the historic city centre. You’ll get experience of a wide range of activities as you contribute to our work, and you’ll also take responsibility for an independent project to complete during your internship.

As an intern, you’ll work in one of two areas:

Software development: You’ll contribute to building our web-based platform and global conferencing API. Working within our agile team, you'll be exposed to the latest development processes and you’ll get hands-on experience with a modern development stack including Angular, Node.js, AWS, and DynamoDB.

Data science and machine learning: You’ll work on the exciting AI-based search and ranking technologies that we use to find the best experts to speak on any topic. Previous projects in this area include using machine vision to automatically read PDF documents, using natural language processing to implement a translation model, deploying a Kubernetes cluster to deal with our large-scale data processing, and many more!

(We’re also open to considering speculative applications for interns wanting to work in non-technical roles. If you’d like to work in business development or operations, feel free to apply – you’ll have to convince us in your cover letter why we need you!)

Once you’re here, we’ll decide together on a topic for your independent project. In this way, we can tailor a project to your individual strengths, and find something that you are excited about and will help you develop the skills you want to focus on, while also being valuable to our business. To get a better idea of the types of projects you might be working on and what life is like for an intern here at, check out the blog posts from two of our amazing interns from last year, Tara and Preben, here.

Applications close on 29th February 2020.

About you:

  • You’re a final-year student or recent graduate of an undergraduate course. Or a masters or PhD student or graduate. Or maybe a talented self-taught software developer!
  • If you’d like to work on our search and ranking technologies, then you should have skills in data analysis using Python. Experience with machine learning would be a definite bonus, but you can learn this on the job, so an interest and enthusiasm are more important.
  • If you’d like to work as a software developer on our expert connection platform, then knowledge of JavaScript is a must. Experience building web apps with Angular or Node.js would be an advantage but is also a skill that can be learnt on the job.
  • Ability for creative problem-solving is essential for anyone working with us. We’re a small and quickly expanding company, and things move fast – we come up against new situations all the time, and you should be innovative and proactive in how you get us through them.
  • Importantly, you have a desire to work in a startup, and enthusiasm to develop your skills working on real-world problems.

  • Exciting startup environment!
  • Flexible working hours.
